Australia's largest and maximum lovely inland waterways, the Gippsland Lakes are a network of lakes, marshes and lagoons covering over 600 square kilometers. Housed in the preceding Johnsonville school building, the museum exhibits items of historical significance to the Lakes Entrance region. Superb views and a rich variety of plant and birdlike are some of this Gippsland park's attractions. Perfect picnic spots are surrounded by garden and scenic walks meander along bush and farm tracks, former Kurrajong trees, wetland areas and through the East Gippsland Indigenous Plant Garden. View south along The Narrows towards ocean entrance at Bass Strait. View southeast towards bridge at Bullock Island. View southeast along The Narrows towards sea entrance at Bass Strait. Offering a unique and educational sea safari where small groups travel in a custom built vessel to search and investigate sea birds and marine life in and around Lake Entrance with visits to secluded lakeside beaches. Take a skippered fishing charter aboard the Rambo Queen on Lake Ayers, or hire a canoe or kayak and enjoy a paddle on the extensive waters of the lake, honest a scanty kilometers east of Lakes Entrance. Appreciate a scenic cruise with expert commentary, covering areas from Lakes Entrance to Lake King, and see dolphins (seasonal) and the marvelous birds and floral of the lakes' system. Offering both ocean and lake fishing from Lakes Entrance on a purpose built 35 foot vessel with fishing gear and bait supplied. Bairnsdale's important and ambitious commercial center is built around the Princes Highway which opens up into a wide boulevard featuring trees, gardens and a rotunda in the central strip. Abundant parks fore the Mitchell River, including the park at the worn river port behind the post office, offering BBQ and picnic facilities as well as a jetty. Fishing and boating jetties are also located on the west bank of the Mitchell River, fair south of the Princes Highway on the road to Paynesville. Its commercial center is along Nicholson Street and includes two supermarkets, a selection of shops and a scanty hotels. Other attractions in Forest Park includes the Orbost Exhibition center and gallery, as well as a number of rain forest walks which begin in the park. Good views of Orbost, the Snowy River and the bridges across its flood plain can be enjoyed from Grandview Lookout, located southwest of Orbost in the little community of Newmerella. There are picnic facilities and walking tracks through the surrounding forests which are home to a large variety of birdlike. As a waterfront town, Lakes Entrance is a very popular all year round holiday destination, including during winter months when the climate is often a scanty degrees warmer than Melbourne. A walk across the popular landmark footbridge, which crosses Cunningham Arm, links the town center with the sand dunes and windswept coastline of Bass Strait, popular with surfers and swimmers. A 5 kilometer return walk from the footbridge along the narrow peninsula of land which separates the tranquil waters of Cunningham Arm from the choppy waters of Bass Strait takes visitors along some scenic coastline and coastal bush to the Flagstaff Lookout which provides good views over the man made entrance into the Gippsland Lakes. A number of lookouts bear panoramic views over Lakes Entrance and the surrounding waterways, with maximum located on or close the Princes Highway, fair west of the town in the neighboring community of Kalimna. As a holiday town with a important emphasis on water activities and a high concentration of marinas and jetties along its extensive lake coastline, it is no surprise that Lakes Entrance is the bottom of one of Australia's largest fishing fleets. It is believed to be the largest wooden bridge still standing in Australia.
